#92 Mallory's Christmas Wish

There are so many amazing Pike family moments in this book, but here is one of my favorites...

“On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...” Mom sung out.

“Twelve, um...velociraptor eggs!” He beamed. “You know, like a dozen? And then when you crack them, Raaaaawr!”

“The tape’s running,” Vanessa muttered.

Together, we sung the rest of the song we’d just improvised: “Eleven socks a-stinking, ten backs of Snickers, nine leaping wombats, eight soggy tacos, seven bologna-and-peanut-butter sandwiches, six silly-billy–goo-goos, fiiiiive hornet stiiiiings...four crawling nerds, three stooges, two curdled gloves, and some garbage in a bare tree!”

Mom clicked off the recorder. Margo and I fell back on the couch pillows, laughing. The triplets exchanged high, low, and every other imaginable kind of five. Claire, Nicky, and Vanessa collapsed into giggles on the floor.

“Play it back,” Byron yelled.

My mom had already pressed the rewind button. When the tape reached the beginning she played it:

“On the first day of Christmas...” our voices began.

Ding-dong.

“I’ll get it!” three or four of my siblings shouted.

Mom turned off the recorder. “I knew it. It’s the Christmas Carol Police, coming to arrest us.”

“Really?” Claire said, bolting to her feet.

“Just kidding, sweetheart,” Mom reassured her.

I have always wondered who said what! Of course it's obvious that day 6 was Claire, and it's canon that day 12 was Nicky, but the others could really go either way. I'm guessing that "7 bologna-and-peanut-butter sandwiches" was supposed to be "salami-and-peanut-butter sandwiches" (since that comes up in several books), so that was probably Jordan. I think "four crawling nerds" could have been Mallory and "three stooges" was probably one of the triplets. Maybe "ten bags of Snickers" was Byron? As far as "some garbage in a bare tree".... maybe they were all arguing over who got to start the song, so Dee started the carol?
